Migration Watch UK comment on new report by Independent Chief Inspector of Borders on UK asylum system

November 18, 2021

The report shows very clearly how the asylum system is poor value for taxpayer money, and is beset with inadequate working practices and backlogs.

It also reveals that people travelling from France accounted for well over half - 60% - of asylum cases thought to be 'inadmissible' to the UK (between 1 January 2021 and 18 May 2021), including those who came to the UK without permission by small boat.

Commenting, Dr Ben Greening, Executive Director of Migration Watch UK, said:

Although the report is riddled with well-founded criticism of the problems besetting our overwhelmed and abused asylum system, the one 'stakeholder' that gets no mention is the taxpayer who has to foot the rocketing bill for this monstrous, bureaucratic mess - now £1.5 billion per year.

We need root and branch reform to reduce the rising number of claims by those coming here illegally from safe places, and to cut down on blatant asylum abuse that can put the public at risk. There must also be more support and better leadership from the top so hardworking asylum caseworkers can deliver greater value for money. This situation must not be allowed to continue.
