It is good that France is now prepared to engage seriously with the UK to deal with this crisis - this is welcome. Handing over more money to France to tackle the problem in their territory, is not.
However, if it enables the French to reduce the flow of illegal migrants setting off from their beaches and inhibits the activities of traffickers, then we can live with it. However, what this latest agreement won’t do is stop the boats. The absence of a returns agreement with France is disappointing, if not unexpected; that would have had a much greater impact.
