Alp Mehmet, Chairman of Migration Watch UK, said:
It is difficult to see how expanding the existing system for taking in refugees - which includes multiple routes - will have any effect in reducing illegal channel crossings which this year so far are 28 times the 2018 total.
Nor should we ignore the impact that the placing of large numbers of asylum seekers and refugees in some of the most needy UK communities has had. Those who are already bearing the brunt of growing unemployment, low wages and the housing crisis also matter.
